Dear Elder, is it wrong to have thoughts of suicide?
What a great question. Thoughts are merely pieces of information, and it is extremely difficult at times to control every thought. Thus, having a thought isn’t sinful. However, how those thoughts or handled after they are received could lead to sin. The bible teaches that we carry the power to control those thoughts that are contrary to the faith.
The weapons we use in our fight are not made by humans. Rather, they are powerful weapons from God. With them we destroy people’s defenses, that is, their arguments and all their intellectual arrogance that oppose the knowledge of God. We take every thought captive so that it is obedient to Christ. We are ready to punish every act of disobedience when you have become completely obedient.
A perfect example of this is Christ himself. Directly after he was declared to be the Son of God he was led into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil. Then the devil took him into the holy city and had him stand on the highest part of the temple. He said to Jesus, “If you are the Son of God, jump! Scripture says, ‘He will put his angels in charge of you. They will carry you in their hands so that you never hit your foot against a rock.”
The thought to “Jump” off the highest part of the temple is equal to the thought of suicide. But let’s examine for a moment the context here. Jesus was in the wilderness alone and hadn’t eaten anything for 40 days and 40 nights because he was fasting, and then came the tempter.
Do you see the mechanics of suicide? It works during those times of feeling along and weak. However look at how the LORD deals with those thoughts in his weakness. Jesus said to Satan, “Again, the Scripture says, ‘Never tempt the Lord your God.'” It appears that suicide is Satan’s way of leading people to tempt God. He does this by getting victims to believe that God will save then in spite of, which is a lie.
Therefore too answer your question. No, it isn’t a direct sin to have thoughts of suicide. However, one must learn to control those thought by using the word of God. I would add, if you lack this ability, please seek help from a trusted well-rounded leader.
