Q: Hello I was wondering about comedians, is it wrong in the sight of God to be entertain by Christian comedians? I like to tell a joke every now and then myself.
A: The bible teaches us to put away lying and to speak truth, withdrew from foolish talking and jesting. The bible is the living word of God and it should never be used by anyone as a tool to amuse for hire. Real preaching and real preachers don’t preach to entertain us, instead, wherefore he says, when he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men. And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ: That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive; But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ: (Eph 4:8 Eph 4:11-15)
The word of God is given to bring perfecting, edification, unity knowledge and maturity thorough correction, reproof, instruction and doctrine. There are things in the bible that could perhaps bring one to laughter or crying, however, the word of God should always be taken seriously at all times. Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers. (Eph 4:29) Our communication should be good and edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers. Grace is the power or strength of God that bring salvation, can anyone be save through a joke? Beside, there is no such thing as Christian comedians. The word Christian means to be a follower of Christ or to be Christ-like. How can anyone be like Christ telling jokes about Christ children or anything to do with our father business?
In the neighborhood I grow up in it was a serious insult for anyone to down talk your parents, so what about God?
But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be once named among you, as becoming saints; Neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not convenient: but rather giving of thanks. (Eph 5:3-4)
